For a group project, I collaborated as part of a mock design agency tasked with reimagining the wayfinding system for Heritage Junction, also known as the Santa Clarita History Center. Our team was responsible for illustrating a detailed map of the physical site, designed for use across web platforms, printed signage, and a souvenir poster. The client for this project was the Natural History Museum, which had recently acquired Heritage Junction and sought a refreshed identity. The overarching goal was to transform the historic square into a vibrant, modern venue that celebrates both culture and history — bridging its rich past with an engaging and dynamic future.

Directional Wayfinding Signage

Overview: For this project, I served as the creative lead for our group, guiding both the visual direction and team collaboration. My responsibilities included developing the overall illustration style, overseeing the creation of supporting design elements, and ensuring the final product aligned with the original concept. I also prioritized fostering an inclusive and encouraging environment where every group member felt heard and valued throughout the design process.

The map illustrations highlighted key features of Heritage Junction, including buildings, pathways, and landmarks. All were created in my signature art style. Three group members contributed by designing buildings and landmarks in this style, while another member managed the typography for the signage. Each element was designed individually and then shared with me; I was responsible for assembling the final layout, carefully placing illustrations to achieve balance, clarity, and hierarchy. Through consistent communication and collaboration, our team ensured that the finished map maintained a cohesive aesthetic defined by unified color choices, thoughtful composition, and a distinct visual identity.

Design Statement: Our team set out to create a wayfinding system that was bold, playful, and fully functional. The vision was to strike a balance between a modern aesthetic and the preservation of Heritage Junction’s historic character, ensuring that the design respected the site’s legacy while inviting new audiences to engage with it.

We identified a diverse target audience, visitors eager to enjoy themselves while also learning about history. To appeal to this group, we incorporated bright colors, whimsical details, and a warm, inviting illustration style. The goal was not only to guide visitors through the site with clarity, but also to spark curiosity and capture attention, whether they were fully exploring Heritage Junction or simply passing by.
